Hoffman wins Deutsche Bank; Tiger stays at No. 1 (AP)

Charley Hoffman made 11 birdies to close with a 9-under 62 and claim the Deutsche Bank Championship by five strokes Monday. Hoffman ran off four straight birdies early to make up a four-shot deficit, and he kept right on going on the TPC Boston to hold out Geoff Ogilvy, Jason Day and Luke Donald. The question is whether it was enough to make him a last-minute pick for the Ryder Cup.

Sharapova loses to Wozniacki at US Open (AP)

Three-time major champion Maria Sharapova lost to top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-4 Monday in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Sharapova, who won the 2006 title at Flushing Meadows, hurt herself with nine double-faults and a total of 36 unforced errors — 26 more than 2009 U.S. Open runner-up Wozniacki.

Cincinnati WR Hazelton has torn ACL (AP)

Vidal Hazelton tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Cincinnati’s season opener, costing the Bearcats one of their top receivers. Tests on Monday detected the tear. Hazelton will have surgery and miss the rest of the season. Mozgov helps Russia reach world quarters (AP)

Russia reached the quarterfinals of basketball’s world championships against the United States, beating New Zealand 78-56 Monday after Andrey Vorontsevich had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Timofey Mozgov, Russia’s 2.16-meter (7-foot-1) center who recently signed for the New York Knicks, added 16 points and seven rebounds.

Alabama will not appeal Dareus’ penalty (AP)

No. 1 Alabama will face 19th-ranked Penn State without defensive end Marcell Dareus, and coach Nick Saban isn’t betting on Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram making it back either. Saban said Monday that Alabama won’t appeal Dareus’s two-game NCAA suspension for improper agent benefits. “We researched it, and we didn’t feel there was any precedent to appeal it,” he said.

Ravens, WR Houshmandzadeh agree to terms (AP)

The Baltimore Ravens upgraded their receiving corps again by agreeing to terms Monday with T.J. Houshmandzadeh. To make room for Houshmandzadeh on the roster, the Ravens traded wide receiver Mark Clayton to the St. Louis Rams for an undisclosed draft pick. Clayton, drafted 22nd overall by Baltimore in the 2005 draft, ranks third in Ravens history with 234 career catches and 3,116 yards.

Roethlisberger out as a Steelers captain (AP)

Ben Roethlisberger is no longer a Pittsburgh Steelers captain. Dennis Dixon is the new Steelers quarterback, at least for the time being. Roethlisberger, suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season, was not chosen a Steelers captain in a vote by his teammates. He has been selected the previous two seasons.
